2020 is the year of canceled events, and the last name to be added to the list of convicts is BlizzCon, the annual gaming convention that features Blizzard games and major esports tournaments. The event was canceled in the wake of the ongoing pandemic, with organizers citing health and safety concerns as a higher priority.
At BlizzCon important announcements about games like Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo and Overwatch are made and esport tournaments are held with great enthusiasm. However, the cancellation of the event is not too surprising since the organizers indicated this in a blog post last month. Blizzard wants to put the event – or part of it – online, just like a number of other events in recent months.
However, this will probably not happen until next year. “BlizzCon is also a stage for major esports events in Blizzard games every year. So we're also looking for alternatives to support some of the high-level competitions that would normally take place at the show, ”said Saralyn Smith, executive producer at Blizzcon, writing about the future status of the gaming convention.
