Motorola already presented its first foldable smartphone in the form of a revived Motorola RAZR last November. The handset was also the first foldable smartphone to be delivered with a clamshell form factor. A few months later, Samsung used this design language to build the Galaxy Z Flip. Despite its announcement in 2019, it took several months for the RAZR to go on sale, causing its specifications to become even more outdated. The RAZR is actually not a flagship smartphone and was delivered with the old Snapdragon 710. For comparison: the main competitor Galaxy Z Flip has the Snapdragon 855+. While the SD710 is a good chipset, it's good for the mid-range segment and not for a device that costs more than $ 1,400. For this reason, the handset was not really exciting in terms of hardware.
Motorola is now preparing its new foldable smartphone, which will be available under the name Motorola RAZR 2 or RAZR 2020. Today, some of the key specs of the device mentioned have surfaced online, and unfortunately the company doesn't seem to have resolved the underperformance hardware issue.
Motorola RAZR 2 Specifications
According to XDA-Developers, an unnamed source has revealed some important details about the next generation RAZR. According to the report, the phone has a code name "Smith" and model number "XT2071-4". The most disappointing part: The Motorola RAZR 2 comes with a Snapdragon 765 (not Snapdragon 765G). The Motorola foldable device will again be among other foldable phones with flagship hardware. The Snapdragon 765 is good, but its performance can't beat the Z Flip's Snapdragon 855+.
The report states that the computing power is coupled with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal memory. In addition, the company will use a 2,845 mAh battery this time. The original phone came with a small 2,510 mAh and it's a struggle to survive an entire day with this amount. This is still less than what Samsung offers with its latest foldable phone. The Z Flip has a 3,300 mAh battery.
Motorola currently maintains essentially the same design as the original RAZR, but the company should develop new display technologies such as UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass). The camera department is equipped with a 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor. That's it! The phone is again delivered with only one camera on the back. Selfie lovers will get a decent camera this time though. Instead of the 5 megapixel unit of the first phone, the RAZR 2 will include a 20 megapixel selfie snapper.
Last but not least, the phone will be shipped immediately with Android 10, with some Motorola add-ons to improve the dual screen experience. The report states that the RAZR 2 will first be official in China and North America, and will eventually reach India and Europe. Due to the presence of Snapdragon 765, the new phone supports 5G networks. However, due to the size of the antennas, do not expect mmWave 5G networks.
Hardware may change slightly until release, which Motorola manager says will take place in September. If the phone contains the exact specifications as stated in the report, we can conclude that Samsung will keep the vertically foldable segment under its belt. In addition, the Korean company is expected to launch a new 5G version of the Galaxy Z Flip in the coming months.
