EA Sports New Golf Video Game To Include LPGA Players And Women’s Major Host Course

When the next-generation PGA TOUR video game from EA Sports makes its return in spring of 2022 after a seven-year absence, it will feature a women’s major championship as well as playable LPGA golfers in addition to all four men’s majors.

The LPGA’s Amundi Evian Championship joins the Masters, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and Open Championship in the game, giving players the opportunity to experience its host course, Evian Resort Golf Club, which is nestled at the base of the Alps and boasts spectacular views of nearby Lake Geneva and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. As part of EA’s long-term partnership with the LPGA, players will also have the opportunity to compete as one of a select number of existing golfers on tour or create their own female golfer to compete in a series of LPGA-themed challenges, amateur tournaments and professional events. It’s the first time the LPGA Tour will be represented in high-fidelity, next-generation game consoles.

“This partnership illustrates our commitment to growing the game of golf and our desire to foster a more diverse and welcoming community,” said Jenny Martin, Senior Producer on EA SPORTS PGA TOUR, who advocated for more female representation in the game and across EA franchises. “I can’t wait for our players to experience this truly authentic women’s golf experience when the game releases next spring.”

To better represent the diversity throughout golf and create an authentic experience, Martin and the development team worked for over a year with a group of golf professionals and a broader Creative Council on all aspects of game development, from design to audio, visual, golf trends and production. One member of that team is former professional golfer Iona Stephen, a GOLF TV and SkySports broadcaster who is joining the EA commentary team as the first female, on-course commentator in the game’s history.

“I’m incredibly excited that EA Sports PGA TOUR laid out a vision to represent female athletes and the LPGA in the game,” said Stephen. “My goal in helping EA is to give women the satisfaction of playing a quality golf game while seeing themselves in a variety of ways that go beyond a handful of female character models.”

Jin Young Ko, who won the 2019 Evian Championship and is the No. 2 ranked female golfer in the world, will be among the LPGA Tour athletes available to play when the game is introduced next year, with a timing that will likely coincide with the Masters Tournament in April. Other LPGA players will be announced at a later date.

The EA Sports golf games were produced from 1990 through 2014, with Tiger Woods having his name on the franchise from 1999 through 2013.
