Karl Schmitt Jr. discusses Louisville Sports Commission’s future plans

The Louisville Sports Commission has raked in over one billion dollars in revenue for the city since its inception in 1999. President and CEO Karl Schmitt Jr. has served the commission for over a decade, and since taking the helm in 2015, he’s led the charge for enriching the Louisville sports sector.

As the largest and fastest-growing segment of Louisville Tourism, the Louisville Sports Commission is dedicated to enhancing the Louisville economy by hosting sporting events in the area.

Schmitt Jr. took time to chat with The Courier Journal, and discussed the Louisville Sports Commission’s recent initiatives, event planning processes and upcoming plans for the Louisville sports scene.

What are the vision and goals of the Louisville Sports Commission?

Karl Schmitt Jr.: The first is the economic enhancement where we bring people to town for sporting events that fill up hotel rooms, and people spend their dollars here in hotels and restaurants and bars and attractions. So that’s the economic development piece. We have two other aspects that really fall under the quality of lives, and one is health and wellness.
