Medford Mustangs turn back Springfield – Medford News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News


After needing late-inning efforts to pull away from Springfield one night earlier, the Medford Mustangs took care of business with an early surge Tuesday to score an 11-5 win over the visiting Timbers at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

Game 2 results of the scheduled doubleheader were unavailable as of press time.

Gavin Schmidt’s two-run single with the bases loaded kick-started a four-run first inning for the Mustangs and Zac Ankeny followed with a two-run double to build an early cushion.

Medford (38-8) tacked on five more runs in the fourth inning to lend enough support for starting pitcher Trey Newmann, who went the distance to run his summer record to 6-0.

Schmidt’s leadoff double in the fourth once again got momentum on the Mustangs’ side, and he later scored on a single by Jace Miller. Darin Marsh added a two-run double and Medford capped the inning with RBI efforts by Tanner Douglas and Eli Westrick to make it 9-2.

Westrick added a two-run single in the sixth inning and finished 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs, while Schmidt was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs.

In Monday’s late doubleheader at Springfield, the Mustangs used late heroics to secure a sweep of the Timbers with 13-5 and 12-6 victories.

In the opening-game road win, Medford tallied five runs in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh to push past the Timbers. Miller, Marsh, Douglas and Schmidt all contributed in the pivotal sixth inning with RBIs.

Eli Westrick went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs to pace the Mustangs in Game 1 along with Douglas (2-for-4, three runs, two RBIs) and Aiden Horsley (2-for-3, two runs, two RBIs). Ankeny and Schmidt each added two hits and two RBIs.

Cody Borraggine came on after one out was generated in the first innign by starter AJ Balsiger and picked up the victory by striking out 10 and walking one with six hits allowed in 5 2/3 solid innings.

In Game 2, Medford scored five runs in the seventh inning to pull away for a win behind RBI efforts from Marsh, Douglas and Westrick.

Marsh, Westrick and Horsley each finished with three hits, while Douglas went 5 1/3 innings to earn the win and Newmann pitched a scoreless final stretch in relief.
