Mill Valley All-Stars stave off elimination with gritty win over Mark West – Marin Independent Journal

The Mill Valley 10s Little League All-Stars advanced to the semifinal game of the Section 1 Tournament on Monday with its second straight win in the losers bracket, a 9-6 victory over Mark West.

Starter Nickolas Welter struck out eight and allowed just two hits in four innings. He left the game with Mill Valley holding a 7-2 lead before Mark West started to rally. Mark West scored four runs in the sixth inning to make it 7-6, and likely would have scored more if not for the efforts of Davis Marshall.

He entered with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth and got Mill Valley out of the jam with its 7-6 lead intact. His 1.2 innings of scoreless work were key to helping Mill Valley stave off elimination.

Ty Cerne played great defense and went 2 for 4 with four RBIs and Adam Mortimer doubled and drove in two runs.

Mill Valley will face either Sonoma or North Oakland in the semifinal on Tuesday at 7 p.m. If it wins, it must win two straight games against the best team in the winner’s bracket to claim the title.

Mill Valley dropped its opener 3-2 to North Oakland but beat Woodland American 16-5 on Sunday.

After building a 10-1 lead through three and a half innings, the San Rafael Pacifics hunkered down and weathered a furious comeback from the Monterey Amberjacks to hang on for an 11-10 win on Sunday.

The Pacifics (13-15) put four runs on the board in each of the first and third innings to jump ahead early before the Amberjacks (11-18) responded in kind, plating eight runs between the fourth and sixth inning. The teams then traded solo runs in the eighth before Michael Theisen closed things out for San Rafael with a two-inning save.

Theisen also hit a pair of doubles at the plate, just one of several standout offensive performances from the Pacifics. Dalys Binder racked up four hits with three runs, Beau Dorman had two doubles and an RBI, Corey Davis drove in two runs while Ben Tsui hit a solo home run and Austin Fitzpatrick added a three-run shot.

  • The Novato Knicks picked up an 8-5 win over the Santa Rosa A’s on Sunday. Jason Franks was the winning pitcher with four strikeouts and no earned runs in his five innings on the mound. Riley Cronin and Jack Morkin each drove in a pair of runs while Desmond Gates went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
