Walk-in vaccinations to be available for people above 40 from May 12: Asad Umar


Walk-in vaccinations for people above 40 years of age will be available from May 12 onwards, as announced by Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Asad Umar. 

“Starting tomorrow the 12th of May all 40 plus who have registered will be able to walk into any vaccination center of their choice and get vaccinated,” the minister stated on Twitter.

He further suggested that the vaccination centers shall remain open for this week and will be closed for two days only, on account of Eidul Fitr.

In a series of posts on Twitter, the minister has pronounced that the mortality rate among people under the age of 40 years has surged at a great pace, especially during the third wave of the coronavirus in Pakistan. It was 1% earlier, but has recently rose to 1.8%.

Explaining further details about the death rate, the federal minister explained that the death rate has risen by 3.8% among people aged between 41 to 50, 7.2% in those aged from 61 to 70 years, 11.1% for people aged between 71 to 80, and 15% for those over 80-years old.

“In Pakistan, the case fatality rate based on cumulative data this strong linkage in our country also reason why we are opening vaccination based on age in descending order is due to finite availability of vaccines globally, as well as vaccination capacity in the country,” the minister stated. 

The Minister further stressed upon the fact that the risk of death due to COVID-19 rises profoundly with age. 

Lastly, he mentioned that both the capacity and supply of vaccines is increasing with collaborative work, at a steady pace.
