when and where is it being held, and who is invited?

When Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, died in 2002, she was given the honour of a three-day lying in state in Westminster Hall, the oldest part of the Palace of Westminster, and her funeral took place 10 days after her death.

More than 200,000 people filed past her coffin during the public lying-in-state, but there will be no such opportunity for the public to pay their respects to the Duke, whose body will lie in a closed chapel throughout.

Will it be a state funeral?

The funeral will not be a state funeral and will not be preceded by a lying-in-state.

The Duke’s coffin will remain at Windsor Castle on Friday but was expected to be taken by road to the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, on Saturday where it would be taken inside by a bearer party of foot guards.

It would be draped with the Duke’s personal standard and a wreath of flowers.

Who is invited?

The Queen will be joined by senior members of the family, as well as Boris Johnson.

The Bishop of London, who is also Dean of the Chapels Royal, was expected to receive the coffin as a royal salute is played by trumpeters from the St James’s Palace detachment of the Queen’s Guard.

Members of the Royal family had planned to say prayers next to the Duke’s closed casket and undertake a vigil.

It is in the chapel that the Duke’s body will remain until the day of the funeral.

The chapel will not be open to the public and plans to open books of condolence at various locations for the public to sign have been abandoned.

The funeral is being organised by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office.

Pre-pandemic, it had been planned that on the morning of the funeral, the Duke’s coffin would be taken the short distance to the Queen’s Chapel in Marlborough Road, via Colour Court in St James’s Palace.

It was there that the Queen Mother lay at rest for several days before her lying-in-state, and it will be from there that the Duke begins his final journey to Windsor.

It had been hoped that the public would be able to pay their respects along the route, which will now be unlikely.

On arrival at the chapel, there is likely to be a brief, private vigil next to the coffin by the Duke’s four children – the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex.
